John Matustk has been building homes for more than 30 years, but he’s spent a lifetime king and working in Lake Geneva. An Oak Brook, Illinois, native, he spent summers during his teen years working on the lake, then returned as a homebuilder after studying architecture and urban design and development in college and graduate school.
In 2010, he founded Matustik Builders Inc. Since then, he’s built nearly 100 custom homes in and around the area. Simply put, “I love the lifestyle, the feel and the people of Lake Geneva,” says Matustik.

By assembling teams of the best contractors and suppliers, Matustik has created distinctive, one-of-a-kind homes that reflect his dedication to the highest quality. But he also knows homeowners never want to miss a summer on Lake Geneva, so he devised his own streamlined construction process that starts with demolition or construction in early fall and ends with a completed home by the following Memorial Day.
Throughout it all, Matustik has a hands-on approach to building, “Too often people design a house and then hand it over to a builder, who hands it over to a superintendent—and details get lost in translation,” he says. “But when I’m involved every step of the way, nothing gets lost. And I treat every home like it’s my own.”
From helping clients design plans through completing landscaping after a build, Matustik says the most exciting part of the custom homebuilding process is seeing how each house becomes a unique reflection of the homeowner’s personality and lifestyle, “because everyone,” he says, “has a different story to tell.”
